Establishment of IGNOU

The idea of an open university was first proposed in India in the 1960s, but it was not until 1985 that the government established IGNOU. The establishment of IGNOU was a result of the vision of Rajiv Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India at the time. Gandhi believed that education was the key to national development and that distance education was the best way to reach the masses. To turn this vision into reality, the government established IGNOU under the Indira Gandhi National Open University Act, 1985.

Early Years of IGNOU

Over the years, IGNOU has grown significantly in terms of its courses, student enrollment, and reach. Today, IGNOU offers over 200 programs at various levels, including certificate, diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate courses. Its programs are designed to meet the needs of various sections of society, including women, minorities, and people with disabilities.

One of the key factors that contributed to the growth of IGNOU was its focus on technology. IGNOU was one of the first universities in India to adopt information and communication technology (ICT) for teaching and learning. It established its own satellite, Gyan Darshan, which broadcast educational programs to students across the country. It also launched its own e-learning portal, eGyanKosh, which provides access to digital resources, including e-books, videos, and audio files.

In addition to technology, IGNOU also expanded its reach by building partnerships with other institutions. It established collaborations with national and international universities, including the University of London, to offer joint programs. It also partnered with organizations such as the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to provide education to remote areas.
